Lenten Devotional: Unconditional Love by Janet Whitney

Over this Lenten season, the Spiritual Formation team at First Presbyterian Church in Bend put a call out to all to submit writings for a Lenten Devotional. I will do my best to post those here daily. You can also go to our website and access all of the devotions on a pdf file.

Here is the next submission:

Unconditional Love

High risk children, they call them. They are kids, ages 6 weeks to 4 years, who have been identified in danger of abuse because their home situation is so stressful. Their parents, suffering from a variety of risk factors, attend parenting classes at Mountain Star Relief Nursery. The babies and toddlers come to us.

Our job, as teachers and volunteers, is to love them and provide a safe environment where they can play, explore, and learn to trust. Babies get rocked. What a great job! Just watching one and two years olds toddle around, run into each other, fall down, get up and fall down again while exploring their environment is a huge joy. We are “tasked” with holding them and giving them lots of hugs.

What more can be said? Being recruited to love little children is a job Jesus loved and did well at. How could I be so lucky?

Matthew 18:5 “Whoever receives one child such as this in my name receives me.”
