Boy Scout Sunday- February 7, 2010

Boy Scout Sunday is February 7th, 2010.  It is a very special date as the Boy Scouts in America turn 100!  We are currently looking for photos, memorabilia, history or information about our Troop, Pack or Explorer unit that were chartered by First Presbyterian Church, Bend.  If you have something you would be willing to share for this special occasion, please contact Becky Brown, 541-382-4357, or Stephanie Seed, 541-330-0003 or seeds@uci.net.  Thank you!

A Scout is…Reverent.  We are seeking people of all ages who are or were involved with Boy Scouts to help on Scout Sunday, February 7th, 2010.  You are encouraged to wear your uniform! If you would like to help greet, usher, acolyte, serve coffee or are able to serve communion that Sunday at first or second service, would you please contact Becky Brown, 541-382-4357 or Stephanie Seed, 541-330-0003 or seeds@uci.net.  We would especially love to hear from any Eagle Scouts!  Thank you!

Scout Sunday is the Sunday just prior to the anniversary of Scouting in the USA-February 8th, 1910.  This is the day when Mr. William D. Boyce and a group of businessmen, educators and political leaders founded the Boy Scouts of America.  The final word of the Scout law is reverent as God or belief in a higher power is at the center of the Scout life.  It is also prominent in the Scout Oath/Promise for all levels of Scouting: “To do my duty to God…”  Scout Sunday was added to the Scout celebration in the 1940’s.  Our church has a rich and long history of Scouting-starting almost from the beginning of Scouts in the United States.  For many years, the troop chartered by our church has helped with or attended services on Scout Sunday.  Past leaders of the troop include Leo Bishop and George Marshall (both members of our congregation).  We have also nurtured many boys from Cub Scouts onto completion of their Eagle Scout Award. Some records indicate that the first meeting of a Boy Scout Troop in the area met at the log cabin downtown that was our first church building.   In the next few weeks, I hope to acquire more historical information about Scouts in the area, especially as they pertain to our congregation.  I will update you as to my findings.
